Hardware for TrueArchive

A big archive.
A small travel bag.

A hard drive for your memories at home. An SSD for the road. And a small hub to connect your camera card, phone and storage.

HDD at home · SSD on the road · USB-C on your phone

01 · Your archive at home

Room for your entire collection.

A desktop hard drive is a useful starting point for a large collection. Both ranges require external power and work best in a fixed place at home.

Another option for a large archive

Seagate
Expansion Desktop

Plenty of space in a desktop enclosure. Compare the current offer with a WD Elements of the same capacity, allowing room for future years of photos.

  • 3.5-inch HDD · external power supply
  • USB 3.0 cable and power adapter included
  • Set up as APFS or HFS+ for a TrueArchive archive on Mac

Which capacity? Allow for your current collection plus future years, RAW files and videos. Choose 8 TB for a smaller collection, 12 TB as a middle option or 16 TB for more headroom. An independent backup needs its own storage. A Mac with only USB-C ports needs a suitable adapter or hub for these HDDs.

02 · SSD on the road

For your travel Mac. Or on your iPhone.

The Samsung slips into your bag. The Lexar attaches to your phone with its Magnetic Set. Both ranges offer 1, 2 and 4 TB.

Our pick for your travel bag

Samsung

  • USB-C · up to 1,050 MB/s read, according to Samsung
  • IP65 dust and water-jet resistance · not for immersion
  • USB-C and USB-A cables included · no magnetic mount

Attaches magnetically to your iPhone

Lexar
SL500 with Magnetic Set

A magnetic silicone sleeve holds the SSD against your iPhone or a compatible MagSafe case. Useful when you want the drive to stay with your phone while filming.

  • Magnetic Set includes sleeve, magnetic ring and short USB-C cable
  • Requires a USB-C iPhone · data always travels over the cable
  • Up to 2,000 MB/s requires USB 3.2 Gen 2×2; do not assume this on iPhone or Mac

Choose the Lexar “Magnetic Set” version. The regular SL500 does not include the magnetic mount. Attachment requires a suitable iPhone, a MagSafe-compatible case or the supplied magnetic ring. The magnet holds the SSD; the short USB-C cable carries the data. Recording ProRes directly to an SSD also requires a supported iPhone Pro model.

Archiving with TrueArchive

TrueArchive runs on Mac. Set up your archive destination as APFS or HFS+. A travel SSD can hold your archive while you are away. For copying files on iPhone or iPad, use the Files app there.

Recording or copying on iPhone

Direct ProRes recording requires exFAT. The Files app supports additional Apple-compatible formats. Later, import these files on your Mac into a TrueArchive archive on a suitable destination volume. Formatting erases existing data. Apple’s ProRes requirements · External storage in Files.

03 · A hub for travel

Card in. SSD connected. Phone charging.

Look for a USB-C data port separate from the charging input. That gives your SD card, SSD and power supply a connection each.

Cards, SSD and power through one connection

Anker
Nano USB-C Hub · 7-in-1

The slim A83D2 Nano hub fits in your travel bag and provides connections for an SD card, SSD and charger. A useful candidate for a Mac, or an iPad or iPhone with USB-C.

  • About 13.1 × 3.7 × 1.2 cm · 67 g
  • SD and microSD · 1× USB-C data port · 2× USB-A · up to 5 Gbps
  • Separate USB-C PD input · charger not included · also has HDMI

How to connect it

  1. Connect a USB-C PD charger to the hub’s PD charging input.
  2. Connect the hub’s attached cable to the USB-C port on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
  3. Insert your SD card. Connect the SSD to the USB-C data port, not PD.
  4. On iPhone or iPad, use Files to copy photos from the card to your SSD. On Mac, TrueArchive imports them into your archive.

The hub’s USB data ports share bandwidth. Your phone, cable and drive determine actual speed. This recommendation is based on ports and manufacturer specifications, not our own hands-on test. Try the combination with your device before your trip; this setup is not intended for Lightning iPhones.

Try the whole setup before your trip.

The right version

Check capacity, model number, seller and package contents on Amazon. The Lexar should include the Magnetic Set; a desktop HDD needs the right power adapter for your sockets.

A complete trial run

Copy a test card, open a few photos from the destination and try charging while copying. Plan capacity around your actual daily storage needs.

Another copy

One SSD is still just one copy. Keep your photos on the SD cards until another verified copy exists. Store copies separately where possible.
